Pink Vail 2013 took place in Vail this past Saturday, March 9. Pink Vail which is a ski day and concert to benefit the Shaw Regional Cancer center is known as the “World’s biggest ski day for Cancer”. This year over 1,000 participants came out in their pink attire and they surpassed their goal of $250,000 in support of cancer. Check out fun photos of the event!

Nutritional Needs of Skiers

Here are some great tips from Registered Dietitian Taylor Hagan from Aria Spa on Mountain Nutrition after a long day on the slopes!

Nutrition Goals:

Calories: Should be tailored based on intensity of workouts. Eat every 3 to 4 hours to maintain energy levels and help with recovery, focusing on fruits, vegetables, lean meats and whole grains.
Carbohydrates: 2.3-3.7 grams/pound/day. Choose complex carbs to fuel your activities throughout the day.
Protein: 0.5-0.8 grams/pound/day. Choose lean meats to help muscles recover without adding extra calories.
Fat: Fats serve as a long-lasting fuel source. Choose healthy fats from foods like nuts, flax, and fatty fish to promote omega-3 intake.

Concerns:

Pre-ski Meal: Topping off your body;s fuel stores before your first run will help prevent premature fatigue. Eat a carbohydrate-focused meal with a small amount of protein 2-3 hours before hitting the slopes. Go easy on the fat and fiber to avoid stomach upset.
Sustained energy: Spending a day on the mountain can be draining. Stock your pockets with snacks and eat 15-30 grams of carbohydrates per house to keep energy levels hight. Try 1/4 cup of dried fruit or a fruit granola bar.
Hydration: At high altitudes where more moisture is lost through breathing and sweating than at sea level, dehydration is always a concern. Drink water often throughout the day, even if you’re not thirsty, striving for 10-20 ounces of water or sports drink per hour during activity.
Recovery: Within 45 minutes of an intense workout on the slopes, it is important to start repairing muscles and replenishing glycogen. Divide your body weight by 2, and this is how many grams of carbohydrates you should eat after a workout to replace glycogen.Pair with 10-20 grams of protein, and get the necessary sleep to give your muscles time to repair. Optimal recovery today means optimal time on the slopes tomorrow!

Vail prepares for Burton US Open

The 31st U.S Open prepares for a new host this year, Vail, Colorado. The U.S. open will feature the world’s best riders February 25-March 2, 2013. The event will feature both slopestyle and halfpipe events all being held at Vail’s GoldenPeak location. Here is a sneak peak of the building of what is to come next week.

Dog Sledding in the Valley

Just a 45 minute drive from Vail down highway 24 you will find a great alternative to skiing, Dog Sledding! My family and I geared up and packed in the car to take a day trip to the city of Leadville. To get there you take the winding roads through Minturn and arrive in the small mining town. We explored the main street consignment shops and stopped for lunch at Casa Blanca, a great little Mexican place tucked away off the main road.

Most importantly we had a great adventure! As we pulled up to the sledding location we were embraced by 85 barking sled dogs. Don’t be scared by these though, they were all very excited pups ready to get out there and take us our ride. The great staff of Winterhawk Dog Sled Adventures greated us and set us up for a great day beyond the slopes. Check out my great pictures from the day!

Strike out for Breast Cancer

Love, fun and food was in the air at the Vail Breast Cancer Awareness Group’s event, Strike Out Breast Cancer, at Bol on Valentines’ Day. Tony Mauro, Manager of KZYR kept the crowd going and 20 teams competed for the coveted Pink Bowling Pin award. All the money raised by the group stays in Eagle County to support those who have been diagnosed with the disease.

Life in the Country

Not all of us in Eagle County live next to the ski resorts. I live out in the country, up near Adam’s Rib in Eagle. It is still snowing here and I thought I would share some country life photos, starting with sunrise.

All of the toys were covered in fresh snow!

Bluegrass, Beer and Barbecue come to Vail next Weekend!

Look out Vail….the first annual WinterWonderGrass festival will be happening next weekend in Edwards. This event combines the best that Colorado has to offer with many local breweries coming out for the event. Crazy Mountain Brewery will act as host to the event but appearances from other breweries such as Oskar Blues Brewery, The Great Divide brewery, Odell Brewing Co. and many more which will be seen in the beer garden and heated beer tent from 3-6pm Saturday and Sunday.

The 2-day event running Feb.16-17 will feature Bluegrass artisit from all over the country, with headlines by the Infamous Stringdusters and Greensky Bluegrass each night. This is a family friendly event with children under 12 free. Come out for all the fun running from 3-10pm daily.

Other Bands include: Head for the Hills, Drunken Hearts, MilkDrive, She Said String Dusters and Grant Farm.
