The local pickleball scene is picking up at breakneck pace

On any given day on Vail’s pickleball courts, it’s not unusual to come across either a longtime local celebrity or a 12-year old on vacation with his family. There are international tourists. There are former tennis pros. Some players are in their 20s, some in their 80s. They have all discovered a common ground – rather, a precise square of silica court – and a common soundtrack of laughter along with a chorus of that distinctive “thock” noise when pickle meets paddle. “It’s the fastest growing sport in the country,” says Vail Pickleball guru Jerry Stevens. “It’s such an easy game to pick up.” What is pickleball, exactly? According to the sport’s governing body – the USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) – the origin of the game traces back only to 1965, when Washington State congressman Joel Pritchard and businessman Bill Bell spontaneously came up with a ramshackle afternoon pastime for […]

Mountain Biking Madness

Mountain biking has gone from a fringe sport back in the late 1970s with jerry rigged bikes and puffy tires to a favorite past time for almost anyone wanting to get a little outdoor adventure. Take a look at some of the trails: they are shared with spandex-clad pros, groups of pals out for a lung-burning cruise and young kids. It’s a sport that not only has come into its own, but it welcomes newcomers. Eagle is quickly becoming renowned for its network of trails -from easy, short, flowing trails like the Haymaekr to arduous singletrack climbs that end up at 11,000 feet. Vail Mountain in recent years created trails that swirl down the moundain with s-curves smooth dirt. Vail also has a few downhill-only trails. These riders are well protected with full-face helmets, leg, arm and chest protectors and they bomb down the technical singletrack. There are trails at […]

Open Road Calls

Nearly 66 million athletes pedaled their way to fitness in 2017. The numbers are increasing, which is why it’s so important to know the rules of the road. Yes, road bikes have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists in Colorado. Road bike riding provides a great workout—and can cause great consternation between cyclists and drivers. For some reason, the sight of a spandex clad road biker gets some motorists riled up. A Colorado law allows for bikers to ride two abreast when it doesn’t impede traffic. However, one person’s view of impeding traffic is often different than another person’s. It only makes sense on narrow roads, those with little or no shoulder or twisting canyon-type roads, to ride single file. Motorists often wonder why a cyclist would choose to ride on a road instead a nearby bike path. The answer is that often a road feels more safe: the […]

In Search of Outer Peace

Yoga is often practiced in a studio, but during the summer months, the Vail Valley’s beautiful mountain atmosphere entices locals and visitors to bring their mats outside under the bright Colorado blue sky. Karen Anderson, yoga studio director and teacher for the Vail Vitality Center, says yoga is a practice to bring us back to our nature state of peace and connectedness. “Nature has been proven to be healing on all levels,” she explains. “By practicing yoga in nature, we drop our sense of boundary with the world and feel that we are an integral part of our environment.” Many local studios and programs host open-air yoga classes in the summer. These sessions not only stretch, strengthen and energize the body, but the fresh air and sunshine paired with a friendly and fun atmosphere can be very invigorating to the spirit. Guests of all levels are invited to practice with […]

Bright nights at bōl

Usually, bowling alleys echo with lofted balls and crashing pins. But at bol, classy purple hues illuminate icy-looking limestones walls in the sleek, white dining room which transforms into a high-energy dance floor on Friday and Saturday nights. A 60-foot-long bar snakes its way along several big-screen televisions, airing big games and huge air captured in ski and snowboard flicks while Djs spin tunes. You’d hardly know a 10-lane bowling alley exists in the back, because there’s so much entertainment “up front”. As it turns out bōl is much more than just a bowling alley or upscale bar and restaurant; it’s the hottest DJ-ed nightclub, and that has drawn the likes of DJ Craze, Cut Chemist and Z-Trip – Who are used to spinning in metropoles like Miami and Los Angeles. Cut Chemist originally put together a crew with a member of Ozomatli; Z-Trip pioneered the mashup movement and won […]
