Are your food choices Making you sick?

“Are you kidding me? Those are my favorite foods?” was Steve’s disbelieving response when asked if he would stop eating beef and milk products after his food sensitivity test panel showed severe reactivity to those items. This is a common response when food is implicated as the causative culprit of headaches, joint pain, acne or other illnesses. Unfortunately, our food today is not the food of our grandparents. More than we understood before, food is often silently contributing to chronic illnesses like arthritis, heartburn and migraines. The food our grandparents ate was more often than not from a local farmer who was working with the land and using natural fertilizers. The farm animals were free range and ate unmodified grass and hay. Today, most animals are no longer free range. They do not eat grass but are penned in feedlots and fed very high-calorie genetically-modified corn with a high omega […]

Country Strong ~ Mountain Elegance Reinvented

Photographer Brent Bingham Stylist Joette Gilbert Hair and Make-up by Ralffy, Posh! Salon & Boutique The fashion rhythm in the mountains
has always had a western beat. Clothes in wool, leather and fur make
a strong statement. But the true Western woman is an individualist
and creates her own sense of mountain elegance, not afraid to combine the romance of ruffles and lace with sexy, sleek riding breeches or sumptuous cashmere, worth every penny, topped off with a cowboy hat.  And the beat continues with attitude, combining diamonds, pearls and precious stones with jeans, a white blouse and a leather coat. It is a timeless look,
a rhythm that rocks anywhere you go! Purple Italian cashmere wrap

Athletes not surviving on “RICE” alone

RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) is a mainstay treatment of sports injury.  It is not uncommon to see a professional or college athlete on the sidelines with a bulky bandage holding an ice pack in place and an elevated limb following an injury on the field. Participating in sports is becoming more popular, and so are sports injuries. Whether you are a competitive athlete or a weekend warrior, you can consider yourself among the very lucky if you have not yet experienced a sports-related injury or condition requiring specialized treatment. Some sports injuries unequivocally require surgery to repair/stabilize the structure of the bone or function of the joint. But what about injuries not requiring surgery, or those old injuries developing arthritis and years later ache after each game?  Are there alternatives or complements to surgery to assist the body’s return to optimal function?  It turns out that there are […]

How a champion defeated both demons and doubters

Fresh Approach

School district takes on student nutrition. REMEMBER THE TATER TOT? How about the canned gravy, shriveled chicken and creamed corn dumped onto trays in school lunchrooms? Parents at Eagle County schools hope to say good-bye to similar processed foods with a new program called “Fresh Approach” that aims to bring healthier, fresh-cooked meals to school cafeterias. Think: Mac-n-cheese made from scratch with fresh squash hidden inside or spaghetti and meat sauce made with local, organic meat and fresh zucchini. But there’s no such thing as a free lunch. The district’s Fresh Approach group must raise $200,000 to buy fresh produce, whole grains and better meats and to hire and train staff at 14 schools to prepare that food. This comes at a time when the district faces another round of budget cuts. Foodies are stepping in to help. This summer and fall, some of the Vail Valley’s best restaurants will […]
